Kristi Noem
Some Michigan members of the U.S. House and Senate expressed relief Wednesday after President Trump fired controversial Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. She will be replaced by Trump loyalist Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma.
U.S. Rep. Haley Steves said in a statement:
“Under Kristi Noem, ICE killed Americans, used children as bait to detain their parents, lied to Congress, and terrorized our neighborhoods. She should have been fired a long time ago. We still must address the chaos and lawlessness Donald Trump’s ICE has unleashed across our country."
U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar:
"Just a few months ago, I demanded that Secretary Kristi Noem resign for her atrocious conduct as the Secretary of Homeland Security. Her repeated lies and defiance of court orders were so egregious that I supported articles of impeachment against her. Today, I am pleased to hear that she has been fired from her position."
U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell:
"President Trump’s announcement today that he plans to replace Secretary Kristi Noem by the end of the month is long overdue. For months, I’ve called on the administration to remove her from her position since her leadership put politics ahead of the safety, rights, and trust of the American people.
"Secretary Noem’s tenure at the Department of Homeland Security was deeply troubling and marked by repeated controversies—from questions about her department’s oversight, to her decisions to spend federal dollars for personal gain. Most concerning of all, two Americans were shot and killed in Minnesota by immigration enforcement agents under her command this year. It is clear she was not fit to lead an agency with such immense responsibility."
U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin said in a statement:
"Time and time again, Secretary Noem failed the American people and her duty to the Constitution. This was particularly true in how she oversaw ICE. Her departure demonstrates that if you don’t uphold the most basic American values, the American public wants you gone."
Republicans were hesitent to publicly rejoice, but U.S. Rep Bill Huizenga said on X:
"Congratulations to my friend, Senator Markwayne Mullin on his appointment as the new DHS Secretary. You will be a great addition to the administration, Markwayne!"
