The $20 million, pedestrian-friendly renovation of Greektown's Monroe Street, which began in March 2025, is taking shape, with the first of three blocks expected to be completed in mid-June, JC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press reports.
The construction, which has significantly impacted businesses, will widen the sidewalks, eliminate curbs, add bollards and new brick pavers, plant more than 45 trees, and reduce the number of vehicle lanes from two to one along a four-block stretch of Monroe, the Freep reports.
The Freep reports:
► The 500 block of Monroe Street — home to Hollywood Casino at Greektown, Astoria Pastry Shop, Pegasus Taverna, Golden Fleece Restaurant and Level Two Rooftop — is expected to be completed in mid-June.
► The 400 block of Monroe — including Fishbones, Firebird Tavern and the Wayne County Register of Deeds — is expected to be finished in August. The 300 block of Monroe — home to The Old Shillelagh, Delux Bar & Lounge and Table No. 2 — is expected to be completed in November.

The project is taking several months longer to complete than expected because of the complex underground infrastructure work.
For decades, Greektown was pretty much the main attraction in downtown Detroit. However, in the past 10 years downtown has been built up and has created more competition.
